Congress: Don’t restrict community hospital funding. At-risk healthcare providers need freedom and flexibility to sustain their services and deliver quality care.
Community, more than ever, are struggling deliver quality medical care With traditional financingoptions falling short, many rely on innovative funding mechanisms specially designed to provide financial relief and save at-risk hospitals.
However, some Members of Congress have introduced the so-called Health Over Wealth Act that will deny hospitals access to those innovative financial instruments, known as Hospital Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).
REITs have a proven track record of providing struggling hospital operators with critical fundingto stay operational and improve patient care by expanding services, upgrading equipment, and helping avoid closures. Without REITs, thousands of communities across the country risk being left without medical care.
Simply put: REITs purchase hospital real estate and the sale provides a large cash influx that can be reinvested to improve operations. Leasing instead of owning the property is a strategic choice that allows many providers to focus on what they do best, caring for patients – it’s a needed solution for many cash-strapped providers.
The proposed bill will prohibit community hospitals who want to partner with REITs from doing so, effectively cutting off a financial lifeline.
Alarmingly, underserved and rural communities will be the hardest hit by the loss of REIT funding. Americans who already face health inequities will now be exposed to reduced or eliminated access to healthcare in their local area. This is not a solution. This is a problem.
There is still time to stop the bill. Join the effort to keep our hospitals funded, open, and ready to save lives! Sign the petition today.
